This application report covers the performance of the low-energy accelerator (LEA) in advanced signal processing while maintaining the ultra-low-power consumption on a 16-bit MSP430™ FRAM microcontroller (MCU). The LEA module is compared against the performance of optimized softwareenabled signal processing code running on both the 16-bit MSP430 MCUs and a competitor ARM® Cortex®-M0+ based MCU. This application report describes how the LEA module can perform signal processing algorithms such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Finite Impulse Response (FIR) efficiently, allowing for new possibilities in real-time signal processing for 16‑bit MCUs used in a variety of fields such as metering, process control, sensing, and monitoring.
