設計上の考慮事項

Fault Indicators, both overhead and underground, are commonly used for monitoring transient and permanent faults in medium voltage and low voltage power distribution network. While standalone indicators detect the fault passage and indicate locally, more advanced ones that update their status to a central station have RF capability for communication. For maximum benefit, a fault indicator must reliably indicate when fault current passes through the cable to which it is mounted, in real-time, while using low power consumption and with various power sources for reduced service interruption.

Important design challenges for fault indicators:

  • Low power consumption: For space constrained designs, the ultra-low-power reference design uses a minimal pin count microcontroller to monitor and measure the current and voltage parameters where it is installed and a discrete analog front end using hall sensor and digital-to-analog converter for running self-test.
  • Energy harvesting: For overhead fault indicators, our energy harvester reference design shows state-of-the-art power harvesting. It manages the energy harvested from a wide variety of current sources or from the onboard solar cells to power the output of an internal buck converter that powers the fault indicator. The excess energy is stored in a rechargeable battery or a supercapacitor.
  • Real-time communication: For reliable, timely response, the hybrid RF and PLC reference design and hybrid WmBUS and PLC reference design both help extend network coverage for scalability and to improve network reliability.
