Relay Applications Processor Module

Applications processor module (APM) is used for implementing protection, control, monitoring, communication, display and user interface functions in a Protection Relay. A single micro-controller or a micro-processor or a combination is used depending on the application. An APM not only communicates with different plug-in modules in a Protection Relay but also implements protocols required to communicate with other external systems for data exchange and for data logging during power systems faults. It also supports GUI functions including the graphical display.

Texas Instruments offers designers a wide range of embedded processors (ARM Cortex-M3 based) and Sitara™ microprocessors (ARM9, ARM Cortex-A8, ARM Cortex-A9, and ARM Cortex-A15 based). Significant performance and cost benefits can be realized by taking advantage of the Programmable Real-Time Unit (PRU) and the Universal Parallel Port (uPP).

Interfaces and peripherals to external systems
  • Configurable UART Modules, Multichannel Serial Peripheral Interfaces (McSPI), Quad SPI Interface (QSPI), Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) Ports, Multichannel Audio Serial Port (McASP) Modules, Enhanced Direct Memory Access (EDMA) Controller, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Dual-Role Device, High-Speed USB 2.0 Dual-Role Device, PCI-Express, SATA Interface.
Backplane communication with other modules
  • High-speed data bus capable of variables data rates transfer to communicated with plug-in-modules in Multifunction Protection Relay. The backplane implementation can vary from PCIe, PCI or UART (RS485 or CAN).
Power management unit (PMU)
  • Power Management Units (PMUs or PMICs) offers complete power solutions for ARM® Cortex™ processors, including the latest-generation of Cortex A9 and A15 processors. They integrate several high efficiency DC/DC converters and LDOs for the processor core, I/O, memory and other voltages.
